An adventure to the Hohenaualm: The “Little Tibet” of the Zillertal

Hohenaualm Zillertal

It's a sunny morning in the Zillertal and we - Anna and Max, a young couple from Munich - have decided to climb the Hohenaualm, also known as the “Little Tibet of the Zillertal”. The hike is not only tempting because of its views, but also because of the promise of experiencing absolute tranquillity and an almost mystical environment.

Start of the hike - Ginzling

Our adventure begins in the picturesque mountain village of Ginzling. We park our car at the hiking parking lot, lace up our hiking boots and shoulder our rucksacks. The trail first leads us along a rushing mountain stream that glistens in the morning sun. Here we can already feel the untouched nature that will accompany us on this hike. Again and again we hear the chirping of birds and the scent of fresh mountain herbs fills the air.

First stage - through the forest

The path winds its way through dense forests, which provide us with shade and a welcome cool-down. Anna and I talk about the wildlife of the Zillertal and we soon spot the first marmots. The peace and quiet here is impressive - you can hardly hear anything except the sounds of nature.

Again and again we pass small clearings that offer us our first views of the surrounding mountains. The mighty peaks of the Zillertal tower into the sky and give us the feeling that we are hiking in the middle of a movie set.

The alpine meadows - a sea of flowers

After about an hour, we reach an extensive alpine meadow. Here, colorful mountain flowers bloom in abundance and we take a short break on a bench to enjoy the view. The expanse of the Zillertal lies before us and the mountains seem close enough to touch. A truly peaceful place, perfect for a short break and a few photos.

Max pulls out his camera to capture the breathtaking scenery, while I open a bottle of water and take in the panorama. It's a moment of complete relaxation and we both feel why this hike is so special.

Ascent to the Hohenaualm - the final climb

After another hour, the path becomes steeper and we realize that we are approaching the Hohenaualm. Anna stops again and again to admire the view - and of course to take a deep breath! The effort is worth it, because with every step, the view opens up further across the valley.

We pass old stone huts and traditional fences that characterize the alpine landscape. Nature shows itself here in its purest form - unadulterated and wild. It is almost as if time has stood still.

Arrival at the Hohenaualm - Little Tibet of the Zillertal

Finally the time has come: we reach the Hohenaualm, which presents itself to us in all its glory at an altitude of 1,863 meters. The vastness, the silence and the mighty mountains in the background give the place an almost spiritual atmosphere. No wonder the Hohenaualm is known as the “Little Tibet of the Zillertal” - the scenery really does remind us of the vastness and solitude of the Himalayas.

We sit down on the terrace of the small mountain hut and order fresh buttermilk and a Kaiserschmarrn. The friendly and welcoming hosts tell us about the wild winters up here and the challenges of alpine life. The Hohenaualm seems to be a secluded, almost magical place that touches us deeply.

The descent - a way back full of impressions

After an extended break, we make our way back. The descent is easier for us and we let the impressions of the hike sink in once more. It was an unforgettable tour that not only enriched us physically, but also mentally.

Conclusion - a must for every hiker

The hike to the Hohenaualm is an absolute must for nature lovers who want to experience the Zillertal from its original side. The route is easily doable with an ascent of around 3 hours and is also suitable for experienced hikers of medium difficulty. The mystical atmosphere on the mountain pasture in particular makes this excursion an unforgettable experience.

Anna and I are certain: we'll be back!
